"The government of India, Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) invites application for the post of Chairman, Steel Authority of India Ltd," a public advertisement in a leading daily said. The last date for submitting application to PESB is November 9, 2009, it added.

Executives from the company as well as from outside can submit their applications for the post, PESB says on its website. At the receipt of applications, PESB says it will scrutinise the applications and then shortlist candidates for an interview with a selection meeting. The Steel Secretary is also expected to participate in such a meeting.

Roongta, who, started his career as a marketing executive in SAIL in 1972, rose to the position of its Chairman on August 1, 2006. Prior to the appointment as Charmian, he was the Director (Commercial) of the company. He has also held many posts in the PSU including Director (Personnel) and headed Human Resource, Corporate Planning and Raw Materials Division of the company.

Besides, heading the company, Roongta is also the Chairman of International Coal Ventures Limited (ICVL) – a JV company of five leading PSUs --SAIL, Coal India Ltd, Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd, NMDC and NTPC--for scouting and acquiring mining assets abroad.

In his stint at the helm of affairs, Roongta saw the highs and lows of the steel industry. He has been credited by the industry observers for undertaking the company's smooth operations amid the demand slump and price crash due to the global economic slowdown. It is in his tenure that the company started the expansion prgrammes at all its plants to take the overall annual steel production capacity to over 23 million tonnes from the present 14 million tonnes.
