Last Updated 14 May 2012, 20:51 IST

A woman allegedly attempted suicide near India Gate on Monday afternoon, apparently disturbed over some marital discord, the police said.

Aarti Verma, 27, a resident of Shakarpur here had poured kerosene over her body and tried to consume it at the Boat Club, behind Krishi Bhawan at around 12:15 pm, just a sone’s throw away from the Parliament building.

“She was also carrying a match box in her bag. However, our personnel present in the area tried to convince her against taking any extreme step. When she did not relent  and started moving to and fro, they overpowered her and stopped her on time,” a police official said.

Aarti could not consume kerosene, she was carrying in a bottle, but was taken to Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital for medical attention. The official added that she was heard shouting that if she was not able to meet her husband Manish, she would consume kerosene.

The women had a love marriage with Manish in 2010, but he has been missing since June, 2010. Aarti alleges that her mother-in-law had abducted him and added that police were not pursuing her case. She also claimed that her mother-in-law had been torturing her as the marriage was against the family’s consent. A case has been registered on the basis of Aarti’s allegations at Shakarpur police station. “We have informed her family about the incident.

The allegation of her mother-in-law torturing her is being probed and actions will be taken if the fact is established,” the official added.
