Fake MCD man gets 7-year term

A city court has sentenced a youth to seven years for trying to rob a woman at knife-point.

He had entered the victim’s house disguised as a Municipal Corporation of Delhi employee, who would check desert coolers for signs of mosquito breeding.

Additional Sessions Judge Anju Bajaj Chandna dismissed Shastri Nagar resident Babloo’s pleas for leniency and said his case is “unfit for granting a probation”.

“I sentence Babloo to rigorous imprisonment for seven years under Section 397 (robbery) of the IPC,” the judge said.

According to the prosecution, Babloo and Khatri entered the Shastri Nagar house of Babita on May 9, 2011, saying they were Municipal Corporation of Delhi employees and needed to check the desert cooler and overhead tank for signs of mosquito breeding.

Threatened victims

After Babita allowed them to enter the house, they held her and her children at knife-point and told her to hand over valuables.

“Babita suffered injuries during a scuffle. While Khatri managed to flee, Babloo was caught and taken to a police station,” police told the court.

His counsel sought leniency, saying he was the sole breadwinner of his family and has to support his aged parents and younger brother.

The court rejected the plea, agreeing with the prosecution’s plea that such crimes are rising in society and a strong message must be sent against potential criminals.
