DK No 1 in State in PU results

There is a marginally decrease in pass percentage compared to last 2 years

Though Dakshina Kannada district had to be content with the seventh position in the SSLC results, the PU students of the district have made the district proud by achieving the number one position in the State.

From the second place last year, Dakshina Kannada has topped the state in the results, with a pass percentage of 85.70.

However, compared to last two years, there has been marginal decrease in the pass percentage. In 2009-10, the pass percentage was 88.93 and in 2010-11, it was 86.59.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, DDPU-in-charge Rajaveera Indra said that DK was topped the state in 2007-08 and 2008-09. “However, in the last two years, we had to be content with the second place. This year we were expecting first place.”

Toppers speak

Vivek Hegde, a student of Alva’s PU College, Moodbidri topped the district by scoring 590/600. A resident of Shimoga, Vivek, speaking to Deccan Herald said that support from the college and parents combined with regular home work helped him to perform well in the exams. “I want to take up engineering course in Electronics and Communication.

However, the decision will be taken only after the results of competitive exams are out,” he said.

He has scored 100 in Maths, Physics and Electronics, 99 in Chemistry, 95 in English and 97 in Kannada. He is the son of Vishwanath Hegde-Hemalatha Hegde couple who work in the Postal Department.

Another topper of the district Chidananda H, from Sri Sathya Sai Loka Seva Pre-University College has scored 589/600. He hails from Chikkaballapura district.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, he said that the atmosphere in the school had helped him achieve success. He had scored 614/625 in SSLC examination too. “I also went for tuition at Expert. I want to take up my studies in basic science or medical science.

I am trying for IISc. Medical science will be my second preference.” His father Ashwatha Narayanappa is a maths lecturer at Government PU College, Tirumani and mother is Rashmi Devi, a house maker.

He has secured cent per cent in physics and chemistry, 99 each in maths and biology, 97 in Sanskrit and 94 in English. He likes karate, chess, quiz. In quiz, he was selected for the state-level and in table tennis, he was selected to the district-level.

Another district topper is Sumanth N, a student of Expert PU College. A native of Hassan, Sumanth too has scored 589/600. Speaking to Deccan Herald, Sumanth said that he had expected 590 and he was happy that he could reach his target.

“I am not a very hard working student. I never used to study for hours and hours, but the secret behind my success is the attentiveness with which I used to listen to the classes. My grasping of classroom teaching helped me to a great extent to secure good marks,” he opined.

He has scored 100 in Maths and Statistics, 99 in Physics and Chemistry, 96 in English and 95 in Kannada. Sumanth has plans to pursue engineering in electronics. His father B M Nagaraj Rao is the Manager of Karnataka Bank and mother Anupama is a high school teacher.

Andrea Gonsalves from St Agnes PU College who scored 584/600 (97.33 per cent) was confident about securing good marks. “I used to study daily and listen to the lectures in the class. There is nothing to be tensed about, if one does their work on daily basis,” she said and added that she did not allow her II PU to be a hindrance for her passion for music.

Andrea has scored 100 in statistics, 99 in maths, 98 in Physics and Chemistry, 95 in English, 94 in French. Andrea is the daughter of Chemistry lecturers Richard and Ita Gonsalves. “I am planning to take up Engineering and I did well in CET too. I shall decide the engineering college and branch of engineering once the CET results are out,” she said.

Commerce topper

Meghana Madhukeshwara from Alva’s College has secred 586/600 and has emerged as the district topper in Commerce. Daughter of agriculturist Madhukeshwara Hegade-Vidya Hegade couple from Uttara Kannada, Meghana has scored 100 in Business studies, Accountancy and Statistics, 95 in Economics, 96 in English and 97 in Kannada.
