Cop crushed to death in accident

Constable hurled in air, dragged by the car for several metres

A Delhi Police head constable was mowed down by a speeding car at New Usmanpur in north-west Delhi on Wednesday night, police said.

Ishwar Dayal, 53, who was posted at Gandhi Nagar police station in east Delhi and hails from Muradnagar in Uttar Pradesh, was crushed to death while he was crossing the road.

The car driver is absconding. However, the vehicle has been impounded.
The incident took place at the petrol pump near the IT Park in New Usmanpur around  10:30pm.

Eyewitnesses told police that the constable stepped onto the road to cross over to the other side when a speeding Santro car rammed him.

“The impact was such that the constable first flew in the air and came down over the vehcile’s windshield. He was then dragged for a few metres before being thrown to the other side,” said an eyewitness.

Seeing the accident, passersby rushed to the spot and found Dayal in pool of blood. The driver of the vehicle immediately fled from the spot leaving the car behind.

A passerby informed cops about the incident. Dayal was rushed to Guru Teg Bahadur
Hospital where he was declared brought dead. He died due to excessive bleeding and severe head injuries.

A case under sections 304A (causing death due to negligence) and 279 (rash driving) has been registered and efforts are on to nab him.

Police said the driver has been identified from the car registration number and documents recovered from the car.

After a post-mortem on Thursday, the body was handed over to the policeman’s family members. Dayal is survived by his wife and three children.
