Bypass on Mys-B'lore road a distant dream

Density of vehicular traffic witnessed high on weekends

The Mysore-Bangalore road in Mandya city is ever busy with the density of vehicles rising every hour, especially on weekends when thousands of vehicles ply on the road.

As tourists choose this road to visit Mysore and other tourist destinations during Saturdays and Sundays the vehicular traffic is very high. Another problem is, by the time the vehicles pass a kilometre stretch they come across two signals.

Keeping the traffic problem in mind, the Mandya Urban Development Authority had chalked out a plan to lay a bypass road in 2007. But, it never materialised.

As per the blueprint, the bypass road, estimated to cost Rs 120 crore, will pass through Kirgandur, Kyathumgere, Santhakasalagere, Guthalu and Ummadahalli and require around 170 acres of land.

But, the delay in executing the project will prove expensive for the government.

The KSRTC bus stand is situated on the Bangalore-Mysore road and all buses, coming from all places — within and outside the district — have to enter the stand. The traffic signal right in front of the bus terminal is making things difficult not only for buses but for all vehicle users.

Those arriving from Bangalore side to visit tourists spots like Srirangapatna, Brindavan Gardens at KRS and Mysore Palace have to pass through this mess.

By the time the vehicles pass a stretch of just one km, they should cross numerous speed breakers and two signals, testing patience of drivers.

Moreover, the railway station and numerous government offices, schools and colleges are situated on the stretch. Hence, the road is always busy. With fast growth of Mandya city and real estate prices shooting upwards, land owners are not willing to part with their land for the project.

Elected representatives too are not showing any interest for the project. The proposal has been sent to the public works department, awaiting government’s nod.

As soon the government shows green signal, works would begin, says MUDA commissioner Nisar Ahmed.
