Patil, Oppn leader in Council

The Congress high command on Wednesday nominated MLC S R Patil as the leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council.

Yielding to the lobbying by Lingayat leaders led by MLA Shamanuru Shivashankarappa, the Lingayat leader from North Karnataka region was chosen.

Names of Motamma, Veeranna Mathikatti and Patil were doing the rounds.  Patil said: “By choosing a leader from North Karnataka, a long-pending demand has been fulfilled.”

The Lingayat leaders in the party had demanded that the Lingayats be accommodated in prominent positions.
