Think twice before you post

Information Overload

Facebook, Twitter, Blogger and WordPress are no more alien words to people. These social networking and blogging websites have resulted in the world becoming a smaller place.

They have become a medium to share whatever happens in one’s life.

And exploiting this opportunity, people post nearly everything on personal blogs or networking sites.

The question arises, however, on where to draw a line about posting personal
details. Metrolife attempts to find out.

Although social networking websites have been built to stay in touch with friends and update them about the daily happenings in one’s life, people say some privacy should be maintained while doing so.

Yashodha Savadi, a student, says that posting everything on these websites might cause harm to the user.

“People tend to keep posting their photos every now and then, which is harmful as it can be misused by someone. Also, I don’t like sharing my personal details on these networking sites. I like to keep a few things private,” she says.

Similarly, another student, Aksharita Sribasyam, says that one should post things that are relevant and nothing else.

“Why do people want to share everything that is happening in their life? There are other ways to share things with friends. I never post anything personal on such sites,” she says.

However, some are of the opinion that posting about the happenings in one’s daily life is absolutely fine.

Heba Praveez, a student of New Horizon Engineering College, has a relaxed
attitude about posting personal details.

“I’m completely okay with posting everything on networking sites. After
all, what are they for?”she asks.

She adds, “It helps one keep their friends updated as it not possible to be in contact with everyone over the phone.”

Sharply disagreeing with Heba, K Shwetha, also a student, says, “There are
certain things one needs to keep personal. First of all, not everyone is interested
in what one is doing in their life — so they wouldn’t care to read such posts.”

She also points out that people are losing out on communicating over the phone.

“We are past the era of letters, but we can definitely stay in touch through phones. Also, there should be limited people who know about our personal life. One can’t keep posting everything on the networking sites,” she insists.

It’s certain that blogging and social networking sites help one keep in touch with their friends — but it’s important to know where to draw the line.
