Woman found hanging

A homemaker was found hanging at her house at Sir M V Nagar in Ramamurthynagar on Monday. Mamatha, 23, was married to Ashok Kumar, an employee at a private finance firm, for one-and-half-years.

In a death note, she reportedly said harassment by her in-laws led her to take the extreme step, police said.

She was a commerce graduate and the couple stayed with Kumar’s brother Hari and mother Ratnamma. Mamatha’s parents stay at Munne Kolalu.

Kumar got suspicious when she did not open the door after repeated knocks, following which he broke the door open.

The victim’s family members alleged it was a case of murder and not suicide. “Kumar hanged her to death and cooked up the suicide theory,” alleged Mamatha’s aunt Lakshmi.

Dowry harassment

Mamatha had told her parents about the harassment she faced from her husband and in-laws for dowry. They had given Rs five lakh and a bike as dowry during the wedding. Recently, they had given Rs 1.8 lakh and then Rs 30,000.

The victim’s brother Mohan told Deccan Herald that Mamatha had called her parents on Sunday and said she could not take it any more. She wanted her parents to intervene and find a solution, he added.

Kumar told Mamatha’s parents on Monday morning that she went to bed without having dinner and was not opening the door. He did not tell them about her death till they arrived at his house, her family members alleged.

The police booked a case under section 304 B (dowry death) and took Kumar into custody.
