Speaking to mediapersons here on Thursday, GM Pillai, Founder Director General of WISE, said that Karnataka is one of the leading states in clean electricity generation, with a total installed capacity of 24,000 MW.

“The State mandates generation of certain percentage of electricity from renewable energy sources, specifying a Renewable Purchase Specification (RPS) target of 7-10 per cent,” he said.

Karnataka had recently published a draft Renewable Energy Policy targeting an increased energy power generation of 6600 MW electricity by 2014.  Pillai added that the plan would facilitate implementation of the policy, which covers the entire range of energy, climate, fuel and sustainability issues that need to be addressed, in three phases.

The action plan analyses the potential of various renewable energy sources in the State, like wind power, solar power, and grid connected bio-energy, small hydro and off-grid applications.

WISE has completed preparation of the draft action plan for the State, which will be an effective actionable document to facilitate implementation of the Karnataka Renewable Energy Policy.  The project is being funded by UK's Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and supported by the British High Commissioner in India.
