Students learn in small room, school bags wait outside

Last Updated 17 August 2012, 18:24 IST

Facing a severe space crunch, the Government High School in Thimmampalli has been staging classes for students in a small room at a neighbouring hostel.

But as the new room can barely fit in all students, all school bags are left outside in the hall.
Currently, the school has a total of 322 students: 96 in eighth standard, 126 in ninth and 100 in 10th standard. Most of the students belong to the SC/STs or backward classes.

The school building itself has only four rooms. Of these only two are meant for classes as one is used for staff members, while the other is used for computers. In addition, the school faces a shortage of drinking water.

The school also lacks several key staff, including an English teacher and a physical
trainer.

Considering the number of students, the batch was divided into several sections. But the shortage of classrooms forced the management to take up one class in each of the rooms. A third class is being conducted in the hostel room opposite the school.

Students complained that the hostel room is cramped and that they are forced to sit for long hours on the floor.

An eighth standard student, who spoke to Deccan Herald, said that, “We are all forced to virtually stick to each other sitting on the floor for hours. Also, the government should immediately appoint a teacher to take up the English class and provide water facilities.”
