Garbage problem haunts Mandya city

Last Updated 02 September 2012, 17:12 IST

Even as piling up of garbage, due to negligence of the city municipal council (CMC), is posing a problem to the residents of Mandya city, the residents themselves are creating another problem by setting them on fire, resulting in pollution.

The CMC has utterly failed in maintaining cleanliness in the city. While shortage of containers is staring at the CMC, garbage spilling out and growing into heaps is enraging the residents.

At some places there are only old concrete dustbins, and in most of the places even dustbins are absent. So garbage is dumped by residents on open spaces. The garbage stinks when it rains as the decaying process is accelerated.

So, whenever the heaps of garbage grow, some resident sets them on fire to clear it as the CMC fails to discharge its duty.

The smoke from the fire is polluting the environment and also poses health hazards to the people as the garbage is not segregated. All dangerous things like plastic, medical waste, chemicals, etc are gutted giving out poisonous gases.

Even though a ban on the use of polythene bags is in place, almost all residents dispose waste from their houses in these bags.

There has been no strict enforcement of the ban, which is also a failure on the part of the CMC.
