Shivaji Stadium to offer office space, parking lot

Sporting venue to generate extra revenue

Shivaji stadium, which has missed several deadlines of renovation, is finally coming up as a multi-purpose project. While the hockey stadium would soon witness sporting action, it would also double up as office apart from its parking lot being used as a general parking.

A section of the exterior portion of the newly built structure has been designed in a way that the space could be used commercially.

“The extra rooms and space in the exterior portion of the building would be leased out for offices. Several government agencies have also shown interest in hiring the place,” said NDMC spokesperson Amit Prasad.

The Shivaji Stadium, located next to Connaught Place, was to be used during Commonwealth Games as practice venue for hockey. 

However, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) failed to finish it on time. NDMC officials said the civic body later decided to develop it as a multi-purpose project.

Apart from commercially exploiting the space, the underground multi-level parking space would be converted into general parking for the time when the stadium would
not be hosting any sporting event.

“No date has been fixed for opening the parking lot. However, the decision has been taken into that effect. Though, parking rates has not been decided as of now, it is going to be more than the prevalent rate of surface parking in the area,” an NDMC official said.

As per officials, the monitoring committee and Delhi government have set up a task force which will finalise the parking rates in the city.

The two-level parking at the stadium complex has a capacity of parking 750 cars and is likely to reduce the parking woes in the area.

“Both the people working in the offices operating from the building and the people visiting Connaught Place area would benefit from it,” the official said.

Unlike other multi-level parking in the area which is automated, the Shivaji stadium parking is ramp based.

Meanwhile the officials said the stadium is also ready with final touches being given to the structure.

Astro turf on the ground has been laid and the pavilion is also ready, officials said.
