Arvind, Likith set pool ablaze

Nettakallappa Aquatic Centres Malavika bags 50M free silver

The battle for supremacy between two breaststrokers Arvind M and Likith SP produced the much needed spark on the second day of the State Senior Aquatic Championships here on Tuesday.

Arvind got the better of Likith in the 200M breaststroke, piping his rival by a razor-thin margin of 0.03 seconds, posting two minutes 31.82 seconds for the gold in the morning race at the Basavanagudi Aquatic Centre.

In the process, the 16-year-old first PUC Vijaya Composite College student erased the 12-year-old meet record of 2:32.85 set by Vinay B. Likith, the winner of the 100M breaststroke on Monday, bettered the meet mark, clocking 2:31.85. “I just missed it,” Likith said, referring to his defeat in the 200M breaststroke.

It didn’t take too long for Likith to avenge his defeat to his BAC-mate with the 14-year-old edging out Arvind in the evening’s 50M breaststroke event. “I was tired after the 200 IM.

I had to compete against Aaron (D’Souza). It was a tough race,” pointed out Arvind, who finished behind Aaron D’Souza in the 200M individual medley.

Likith, the National Junior champion, who trains under Thulasi H, clocked 32.24 seconds for the title while Arvind took silver in 32.51.

Nettakallappa Aquatic Centre’s Malavika V, who won the 200M freestyle on Monday, claimed a silver in the 50M freestyle, clocking 28.47 seconds. BAC’s Sneha T, who timed 28.36 seconds, pocketed the gold.

Charuhamsini completed a treble by winning the 50M breaststroke (38.42) and 200M breaststroke (3:05.72) titles on Tuesday, adding to the 100M breaststroke crown she won on Monday.
