A 32-year-old woman, allegedly kept locked in a room by her husband for three months, was rescued from a house in Jaitpur in south-east Delhi.

Kavita, who married Deepak in 1999 and mother of three children, was rescued with the help of her family members and neighbours on Saturday afternoon, said a senior police official.

“We are yet to ascertain the reason behind Deepak keeping Kavita locked at their house in Mithapur Extension. She weighed a little more than what a 10-year-old should weigh,” the official said.

“We don't know how long she has been in the room. But it’s clear that she had spent a significant amount of time there,” the official added.

A police control room vehicle took Kavita to Holy Family Hospital. Sources said she is malnutritioned, weighs just 40 kg and suffers multiple skin diseases.

Kavita’s family members alleged that Deepak kept her locked after accusing her of being involved in black magic. They added that Deepak had an extra-marital affair.

Police claimed that Kavita was suffering from tuberculosis, and Deepak was providing her regular treatment. They are yet to register a case.

Deepak told police that Kavita used to shout and run around in the house, so he kept her locked for her safety. He had a digital lock fitted on the door, said the official. “He opened it himself when we went there at 3 pm on Saturday,” the official added.

Kavita’s uncle Soran Lal Aggarwal, a Kotla Mubarakpur resident, claimed that Kavita’s condition suggested that she has not eaten anything for the last six to seven days. “She seems to be suffering from depression due to torture by Deepak,” he said.

He said Deepak never allowed any member of Kavita’s family, including her parents, to meet her for the last three months.
