Dakshina Kannada district Congress President Ramanath Rai said that Congress labour wing will organise conferences at Sullia and Puttur on September 22. In Sullia, the programme will begin at 2 pm while in Puttur, it will be at 4 pm.

Addressing press conference at DCC office, Rai said that Union Minister for Corporate Affairs Veerappa Moily will be present on the day and prime importance will be given to the problems of arecanut farmers during the discussions.

Meanwhile, Ramanath Rai said that the district Congress welcomes the decision on FDI in retail. But the party will request the government to provide more than 6 subsidised LPG cylinders in a year for poor.

KPCC Labour Cell President Prakasam informed that the Central government has released Rs 5000 crores for unorganised labourers. The fund can be used to furnish ESI hospitals and other labour welfare activities. “About this, we have planned an awareness campaign for public at all 8 constituencies of the district. During the campaign, we aim at least 25,000 new members for Congress labour wing at each constituency,” he said.

“The State government collects Rs 1500 crore of cess from builders, but building workers are not getting any benefit out of it. Many accidental death cases of building workers have been reported recently. Hence, insurance should be made mandatory for them,” he stressed.

MCC Mayor Gulzar Banu, KPCC Secretary Ivan D’Souza, Ibrahim Kodijal, P V Mohan, Suresh Ballal, Shashidhar Hegde, Ashraf, Moideen Bava, J R Lobo and others were present.
