A hearty welcome to the freshers

Every college tries its best to make sure its orientation day is something special. After all, it’s an occasion for a new batch of students to enter the college — the perfect opportunity to show them the ropes of life in the institution, as well as to make them feel welcome.

Following a similar policy, the students of Dr B R Ambedkar Medical College put together a grand ceremony for their freshers.

The event was organised jointly by the faculty members and some of the seniors of the college, and although many of the freshers weren’t sure what to expect of it, they emerged much better acquainted with college life.

What made the event even more special is that the freshers were accompanied by their parents, who seemed quite emotional to see their wards take such a big step in their lives.

Both students and their parents gathered expectantly at the college hall, with mixed feelings of apprehension and anticipation.

The entire programme proved to be quite interactive — while senior students got the chance to share some of their experiences, some of the newcomers talked about their expectations and ambitions from college life as well.

What the freshers found especially useful were the brief presentations put up by each head of the department.

These presentations touched on a variety of subjects, including the topics they would cover throughout the year, the allocation of marks and how to best approach a particular subject.

Shreya, one of the first-year students, explains, “It’s particularly useful, because we were instructed on practically everything that we’d go through in the next four-and-a-half years. We have three subjects this year — anatomy, zoology and biochemistry, and the heads of each department took time to explain to us what we’d been going through. Although we weren’t aware of the pattern of marking earlier, we are now.”

That wasn’t all, though. Since some of the senior students, mostly members of the college committee, were present, the freshers seized the opportunity to interact with them as well.

“We met seniors who are in charge of handling college events, and those who are part of the committee. In that sense, it was really good
exposure for us,” Shreya adds.
