The Indian Air Force on Tuesday inducted its first squadron of Su-30 MKI fighters in the strategic western air command, which looks after operational issues concerning China and Pakistan borders.
The fighters will be operated by the 220 Squadron known as ‘Desert Tigers’, based in Halwara in Punjab. The squadron flew MiG-23 till 2005 after which MiG-23 was phased out from the IAF. Subsequently it went on to fly Mig-23 BN, the supersonic strike fighter till 2009.
