Kannan, 21, was stabbed to death by an unidentified man at Austin Town Tuesday evening.

The victim worked as a coolie at his native village near Velur in Tamil Nadu, while his family resided at Lakshman Rao Nagar near Adugodi in the City.

Kannan had undergone an operation a few months ago in the City.

He had come here on Tuesday for a medical checkup. Around 4 pm, when Kannan and his friend Uday were having tea at a roadside stall on Post Office Road, Bazaar Street, a man in his mid-20s approached them, suddenly took out a knife and charged towards Kannan to attack him. As Kannan tried to flee, he stumbled upon a stone and fell down. The assailant caught him and stabbed him repeatedly in the chest and fled.

Uday and others rushed him to a nearby hospital, where Kannan was declared brought dead. The body has been shifted to Bowring Hospital and autopsy will be performed on Wednesday. Vivek Nagar police have registered a murder case and are investigating.

Police sources said Uday told them that the assailant and Kannan knew each other well. They said an old rivalry may have led to the murder.

Fire at godown

A fire broke out in a plastics godown on the fourth floor of a building at Mamulpet Tuesday night.

Passersby, who saw dense smoke billowing out of the building, called the fire department around 9 pm. Eight fire tenders rushed to the spot and put out the fire. Hampagol, technical director, Fire and Emergency Services, told Deccan Herald that the godown had flowers and other decorative items made of plastic.

The godown was locked and the fire department personnel broke the door open to douse the fire. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained. The fire department officials suspect electrical short circuiting may have caused the fire. The owner of the godown is absconding.
