An 80-year-old woman was strangled by unidentified assailants during a robbery at her house in outer Delhi’s Narela area late on Wednesday.

The incident has once again raised the issue of safety of senior citizens living alone in the Capital.

According to police, the octogenarian was identified as Parvati, who lived in Ghoga village in Narela for past many years.

She was living alone since her husband passed away a few years ago and they did not have any child. Her relatives who lived in the neighbourhood used to take care of her.
Her relatives used to serve her food.

On Thursday morning, when a relative went to her house to offer breakfast, he found her unconscious and raised an alarm.

A call to police control room was made and she was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead.

Police said strangulation marks were seen on her neck which indicated that she was strangled by the assailants.

Jewellery missing

Gold jewellery she used to wear was also found missing.

A case of murder and robbery in this connection has been lodged and technical surveillance has been mounted to solve the case.

Statements of her relatives and neighbours have also been recorded. “Preliminary investigation suggests that she was murdered after robbery bid,” a police official said.

Meanwhile, her relative Kavita said that the house was ransacked which confirmed robbery as a motive.
