Dump e-waste and earn little sums: KSPCB

A novel venture of providing minor monetary incentives to the public who dump e-waste here is also being planned.

Speaking to newspersons on the sidelines of a seminar organised by the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board  to mark the ‘International Ozone Day’ on Thursday, the Secretary said unused mobile phones, CDs and CFL bulbs could be deposited in these bins.
“Karnataka generates an annual e-waste amounting to 11,000 tonnes, of which, waste accruing from mobile phones constitute 560 tonnes,” he pointed out. These are very harmful to the environment, he added.

“We are yet to discuss the proposal with BBMP,” he added.

Elaborating on the pollution figures related to the City, Kanwerpal said 2.24 tonnes of carbon-di-oxide and 2,500 metric tonnes of particulate matter were generated annually.   
A S Sadashivaiah, KSPCB chairman said he had instructed all district officers of the Pollution Board to take urgent steps to curb the spread of parthenium in their places.
