BCCI may demand return of Rs 50 crore

Last Updated 04 December 2012, 19:34 IST

After the suspension of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) by the International Olympic Council (IOC), the Indian cricket board might just ask the Sports Ministry to return the Rs 50 crore it has contributed to the National Sports Development Fund for development of medal prospects.

“We are keenly following the developments (IOA suspension) and the matter might come up for discussion. The BCCI brass is very disappointed that the money that was contributed in the Rs 80 crore BEST fund (BCCI-NSDF Elite Sports Talent fund) hasn’t been spent properly,” a BCCI insider preferring anonymity told PTI.

“The BCCI had filed an RTI and we found out that only a nominal percentage of the BEST fund has been spent. Also we gave the money for benefit of medal prospects and we saw that money was spent on renovation of academies. Now with IOA’s suspension, we need to take a call on whether we will ask for the money back from the ministry,” the official said.

Out of this Rs 6 crore was spent on construction of a stadium Jammu & Kashmir and Rs 4 crore for upgradation of PT Usha’s academy.
