If you ever happen to visit Odisha by train and have a casual habit of spitting in public places then be very careful, particularly while walking on railway platforms. You will now attract a fine ranging from Rs 30 to Rs 100, depending on which class of railway station your are walking in.

The East Coast Railway(ECoR) has decided to collect a fine from passengers who would be spitting within railway premises which include the platforms. A notification in this regard has already been sent to station masters of all the railway stations in the state.

According to the notification which, if ECoR officials are to be believed, have been issued as per penalty provisions of Indian Railways Rule, 2012, a passenger who would be found spitting on A-1 class railway stations like the capital city, Bhubaneswar, then he or she would have to cough up a fine of Rs 100. A fine of Rs 50 has been fixed for A class railway stations like Cuttack, the state’s erstwhile capital and Berhampur, the principal business hub in south Odisha.

A sum of Rs 30 will be collected from rule violators in rest of the stations in the state. Significantly, the rule would also be applicable for railways stations under the ECoR jurisdiction in neighbouring states like Andhra Pradesh.
