An elderly advocate was found dead under mysterious circumstances at his office in east Delhi’s Lalita Park during the small hours of Friday.

Subhash Gupta, 57, who lived with his family at Shanti Vihar, was found lying naked in a pool of blood with his mouth taped and hands and legs tied.

Subhash used to specialise in income tax related cases, and had been president of Delhi Income Tax Bar Association, general secretary of Shanti Vihar resident welfare association and chairman of Indraprastha Ramleela Committee.

Police said Subhash made a call to his family at 8.15 pm on Thursday informing that he would return home from his Surana Bhawan office by 9 pm. He also told his personal assistant to keep his briefcase in a Marurti Swift car.

“The PA left for home after keeping Subhash’s briefcase in the car, but Subhash did not return home till 9.30 pm,” a police official said. His family then tried to contact him on his cellphone, but it was found switched off.

Then his family members came to his office at 11.30 pm and found his car parked outside, but the main gate of the office locked.

“Finding it suspicious, they immediately told Subhash’s PA to come to the office and informed police at 12.30 am on Friday,” the official added.

When staff of a police control room vehicle opened the office’s gate, they found Subhash lying naked in a pool of blood with head injuries. His mouth was taped, while hands and legs were tied.

He is suspected to have died due to head injuries and suffocation. “The exact cause of death will be clear only after we receive the autopsy report. We are also waiting for a forensic investigation to culminate,” the official said.

Initial probe has revealed that Subhash’s wallet and mobile phone were missing from his office. A case of murder under section 302 of the Indian Penal Code has been lodged with Shakarpur police station. “We are investigating the case from all possible angles and estimating the valuables missing from the office,” the official added.

Subhash’s body was handed over to his family after a post-mortem at Sabzi Mandi mortuary on Friday.
