We will fight case on victim's behalf: BJP

Stringent punishment should be meted out to all the gang rape accused and the trial should be done fast, said MP and BJP women wing national president Smriti Irani on Wednesday.

At a protest at Jantar Mantar, she said it was a matter of shame that a gang rape was committed in a moving bus, and that too during the tenure of a woman chief minister.
“But the government is satisfied by stating that the licence of the bus in which the crime was committed has been cancelled,” Irani said.

“After such incidents, we feel outraged. We express our dismay, but we actually don’t do anything constructive on the ground to prevent such cases. If we want to prevent them, then justice has to be delivered at a faster pace,” she added.

Job for girl

City BJP president Vijendra Gupta said the municipal corporation will employ the rape victim, a physiotherapy student, in its health department.

“We will fight the case on her behalf in court so that not a single accused escapes punishment,” he said.

Hundreds of BJP workers belonging to its Mahila Morcha and Yuva Morcha assembled at the protest venue.

Some party workers, including Irani and Gupta, who marched towards the Prime Minster’s house, were taken into police custody.

Jaya meets police chief

Rajya Sabha MP and actor Jaya Bachchan, two other parliamentarians and some NGO members met police commissioner Neeraj Kumar on Wednesday to discuss women’s safety issues in the capital.

A group of some 100 women and college students also protested outside the police headquarters, demanding to meet the police chief.

After the meeting, Neeraj Kumar said, “Jaya Bachchan, Jharna Das, T N Seema and women rights representatives have demanded to form a monitoring committee to check crime against women. We also think that there must be such a committee.”

“The committee will have a nodal officer, who will be in touch with women rights representatives from NGOs,” he said.

Jaya Bachchan said Kumar has assured the case will be dealt with in a strict manner. “I appeal to women organisations to collect Re 1 from every member to contribute to the victim’s treatment,” said Bachchan.

“I will also appeal to the government to allow me to use funds from MPLADS so that I can donate money for treatment. Who knows the family members have enough money for treatment. Medicines are costly enough,” she said. Police and the government should take care of the victim and her family members, she added.
