'Discipline needed among automen'

Last Updated 11 October 2009, 19:10 IST

Speaking to Deccan Herald on Sunday here, the official said the government has begun to initiate reforms to help the citizens and the traveller/passenger.

“The auto drivers have a right to go on strike, but they also have a duty to provide good public service, that is sadly missing on their part. There is no alternative but to fall in-line and provide efficient public service. A sense of discipline and rule of law among auto drivers is the need of the hour” said the official.  The department said there is a lack of understanding among auto unions on the notification to change colour of autos in the City.

“Not all autos are required to go in for a change of colour. Only four stroke autos, that run on LPG (there are an estimated 19,000) need to have the change. We are willing to give adequate time for them to change” added officials.
On the issue of digital meters, the Department said it is required, as they are tamper proof.  “We are willing to help automen negotiate with meter manufacturers on offering a lower cost digital meter” said Transport Department officials.
