Delhi Police constable Subhash Chand Tomar died of heart attack possibly due to injuries on his chest and neck by ‘blunt force impact’, police said on Wednesday citing the post-mortem report.
The case has been transeferred to the crime branch, who have sent a notice to Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital medical superintendent Dr T S Sidhu. He has been asked to appear with Tomar's medical records.
“The notice has been sent as Tomar’s post-mortem report contradicted the medical superintendent’s version that the constable did not suffer any injury,” a police official said.
Tomar, who suffered injuries on duty during Sunday’s anti-gang rape protest at India Gate, passed away at Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital on Tuesday. He had been battling for life on ventilator since Sunday evening.
K C Dwivedi, additional commissioner of police (New Delhi), said Tomar’s post-mortem was conducted at Lady Hardinge Medical College on Tuesday and the report was handed over to police on Wednesday. “Myocardial infarction and its complications that could be precipitated by multiple ante-mortem injuries to neck and chest produced by blunt force impact,” the report stated.
Sources said Tomar’s ribs were fractured on the left side, while effusion of blood was present on tissues and neck muscles. There were speculations over exact cause behind Tomar’s death with police insisting that he was assaulted by protesters at India Gate, while eyewitnesses claimed that he collapsed on his own.
Dwivedi further said protesters had attacked Tomar when he stopped them from breaking barricades. “A probe into the case has been shifted from New Delhi district to the Delhi Police crime branch,” he added.
Doctors at Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital have already confirmed that Tomar suffered a heart attack, but highlighted that he had no major external injury except for some cuts and bruises. “Doctors revived him after he came in a serious shock and in a state of total collapse. He was not stable due to which we shifted him to the ICU and put him on ventilator,” Dr Sidhu said.
A case of murder, rioting and damaging public property has been lodged with Tilak Marg police station. The police have also detained eight people over the attack on Sunday. Accused Chaman Kumar, Shankar Bisht, Nand Kumar, Shantanu Kumar, Kailash Joshi, Amit Joshi, Abhishek and Nafees Ahmad were released on bail on Tuesday.
They, however, claimed that they have been wrongly implicated in the case and were not detained from India Gate.
