PUC examination fiasco

Last Updated 28 December 2012, 19:11 IST

The Pre University department is faced with the challenge of organising the annual II PU 2013 without untoward incidents like this year.

The II PU exams this academic year were a catastrophe as a series of question paper leaks forced a change in schedule of the exams leading to many reported cases of depression among students who appeared for the PU exam this time.

It began with the leak of Mathematics paper and then the Physics. There were rumours that Chemistry paper too was leaked and the entire schedule was changed.
Finally, the department was forced to reschedule Business Studies, Marathi, Urdu, French, Kannada, Tamil, Malayalam, Arabic, Hindi, Telugu, and Sanskrit exams. Students had to prepare all over again for an exam that seemed never ending.

Ripple effect

It finally ended on April 5. Not just this, this change is schedule had a ripple effect on the entrance exams as well. The state’s Common Entrance Test (CET) was postponed to May 21 from the earlier plan of conducting it on May 3. This set on roll another bout of confusion as these dates clashed with the AIEEE entrance exams.

Further students were in for a rude shock as the PU lecturers went on protest during the evaluation time, demand a hike in pay scale and other benefits to the teaching community. The evaluation also took a beating and the results were out only in May, a month later than what was planned by the department.

The entire process of setting the question paper and getting it printed in Kolkata were questioned by many as this gave many possibilities for misappropriation.
After an arrest of about 6 people and dismissal of nearly 18 lecturers in the exam paper leak row, the CID began investigations into the racket. Investigation is still on.

Milestones

* Question papers of II Pre University course leaked before exam. First time in the history of the state exams of more than 3 subjects rescheduled.
* II PU answer script valuation takes a beating as lecturers go on strike demanding revised wages.
* Results of exam delayed by more than a month.
* Common Entrance Test rescheduled, clashing with national entrance tests dates CID takes over investigation of the case. Investigation is in progress.
