Maharashtra’s Tushar Shelke clinched gold in the Indian Round Elimination event on the penultimate day of the 33rd National Sub-junior archery championships at the Sree Kanteerava stadium here on Friday.

Eighteen-year-old Shelke from Amravathi won the elimination round winning five games quite comfortably. After he got a bye in the first game, Shelke defeated Pradip Murmu of SPSB 6-0, beat Odisha’s Bibhi Sansanta 6-2, put it past Santosh Kumar of UP 6-0 and finally got the better of Sachin Vedwan 6-0.

Shelke had tallied 351 points in the 20M event held on Wednesday and equalled the national record. The feat was brought to notice on Friday.  Jharkhand’s Mukesh Turi scored 350 and Tumteeriya of Chhattisgarh fetched 346 points to finish second and third respectively.

Shelke, who is a first year BA student at Shivaji Mahavidyalaya, felt he was successful at the meet because of a new technique he used on the arrow. “I twist the feathers on the arrow and it’s something that gives the arrow more spin, thereby improving the accuracy and stability,’’ the lanky Maharashtrian added.

Turi came second while Vedwan finished third in the elimination round.

In the Indian Round girls’ event, Simpy Kumari of Jharkhand pocketed the gold while Assam’s Gohela Boro bagged the silver and another Jharkhandi Indrani Kujur settled for the bronze.

Thirteen-year-old Kumari won three games with a 6-0 margin and was only stretched in her fourth game by Kerala’s Surabhi VK. Both archers were tied on 5-5 after which Kumari shot 10 in the tie-breaker to Surabhi’s nine and sealed the title.
