Decline in sex ratio in the country continues to remain a cause for concern. Even as attempts are being made to even out the numbers, statistics of voter’s list drawn up for Mandya City Municipal Council (CMC) elections shows an encouraging sign.

According to the list of 35 wards in the CMC there are a total of 1,00,512 voters, of which 50,320 are female voters and 50,192 are male voters.

In 18 wards, women are a majority. Only eight of these 18 wards are reserved for women.

In the remaining ten wards where there is no reservation, only three candidates have been fielded in two wards.

In ward number 29, Bharathi K is the women candidate from a Congress ticket, while Kempamma and Soubhagya are independent candidates for ward number 35.

Given the fact that women voters are a majority in all the wards, the women candidates have realised that they have an edge over their male counterparts.

Parties have formed special women teams to campaign for the elections, primarily in residential areas of the city.

Statistics reveal that ward 3 has 1,964 women voters as against 1,934 men; ward 4 has 1,729 women to 1,685 men; ward 5 has 1,547 women to 1,533 men; and ward 12 has 1,618 men to 1,693 women.

Similarly in ward no 13, 18, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33 and 35, the fairer sex are a majority, which has forced the parties to concentrate their efforts on wooing women to secure their political fortunes.
