Work on indoor stadium nearing completion

Last Updated 25 March 2013, 18:11 IST

Soon sportspersons will get to play in a well-equipped spacious indoor stadium, work on which is likely to be completed by April or May.

The stadium, being built on the premises of Sir M Visvesvaraya district stadium, will provide space to play over eight to 10 games at a time. Facilities  will be provided to sportspersons for their daily workout.

Nirmiti Kendra began work on the two-storey building in March 2011 and it should have completed the construction in 18 months, barring the rainy season. But, delay in release of the grants and other reasons affected the work, resulting in tardy construction.

Expenditure

“The estimated cost of the stadium has escalated to Rs 2.46 crore from the initial estimate of Rs 1.90 crore. The increase in construction cost is due to hike in prices of construction materials. So far, Rs 1.90 crore has been released and the building will be commissioned soon after the reminder is released,” said Krishnegowda, planning director, Nirmiti Kendra.

Works on floor, tiles, painting and electricity connection are pending, he added.

Athlete Manchanabele K Srinivas commending the initiative of the Youth Services and Sports Department to provide sportspersons with a well-equipped stadium, said that the department should also continue to show similar interest in maintaining it.
