6 legislators in Tamil Nadu suspended

The Tamil Nadu Assembly on Monday suspended six members belonging to actor-turned-politician Vijayakant’s DMDK from the House for one full year for their unseemly fracas in the previous session when they had attempted to attack some “dissidents.”

The suspended members of the DMDK—which is the main Opposition in the Assembly with 29 MLAs—were Parthasarathy, Murugesan, Nallathambi, Senthilkumar, V C Chandrakumar and Arul Selvan.

The Assembly adopted a resolution moved by House leader O Pannerselvam, based on the findings of the Privileges Committee report which enquired into the February clash episode. The report was earlier tabled by Deputy Speaker Pollachi Jayaraman, who also heads the Privileges panel.

Speaker Dhanapal informed the House that the six MLAs who had been suspended would not be entitled to their salaries and other perks during the suspension period.  He directed the MLAs to leave the House amid loud protests by DMDK members who asserted that the suspension resolution should have been first discussed before putting it to vote.
