Alva's College bags overall champs trophy

With the Alva’s College in Moodbidri, bagging highest number of medallists in the inter-university as well as inter-collegiate competitions in the academic year 2012-13, the College was presented the overall championship - Mangalore University rolling silver trophy - for the year 2012-13 at a felicitation programme organised by the Mangalore University here on Tuesday.

SDM College, Ujire, won overall runners up while the Mangalore University campus won the third position.

The Mangalore University inter-collegiate tournaments’ overall performance in men’s section was won by Alva’s College, Moodbidri, while the SDM College, Ujire and Mangalore University campus won the second and third place respectively.

In the women’s section, Alva’s College, Moodbidri, won the first place followed by SDM College and Alva’s College of Physical Education, Moodbidri.

Mangalore University team which had won first place in All India competition in kho-kho, ball badminton team which had secured silver medal in all India inter-university tournament, hockey team which had secured first place in South Zone, kho-kho team which secured third place in south zone, kabaddi team which had secured third place in south zone tournaments were given incentives on the occasion.
Speaking on the occasion, Mysore University Director of Physical Education Dr C Krishna called upon the sports talents to practice healthy sports in their life.

He said that to win medals and prizes, a few colleges engage in malpractices by re-admitting the students of other colleges after the first year. This act should be condemned at any cost. Students should not get lured for these acts.

The colleges should identify local talents and promote them and help them to achieve excellence in their chosen area rather than indulging in malpractices to win medals, he said and added that if such malpractices continue, then it will affect the performance of other sports talents.

Mangalore University Vice Chancellor Prof T C Shivashankaramurthy said that the univesrity has been providing sports scholarships for the students at the UG level.
Outstanding achievers in sports, NSS, NCC and cultural activities are given credits in the credit based semester system.

The Mangalore University has already constituted a committee to check malpractices that are practiced in sports. Mangalore University supports only fair sports, he added.

Winners of various sports individual events at the national-level and winners of Mangala Vaibhava/Prathibha Puraskar were also felicitated on the occasion. Students who had created records in inter-collegiate meets and physical directors, coaches and managers were also felicitated on the occasion.

Registrar Prof P S Yadapadithaya, Director of Physical Education Dr H Nagalingappa, Director of Student Welfare Dr  A M A Khader was present.
