A wedding party turned into a mourning session as one of the relatives of the groom was run over by a BMTC bus that the family had hired to ferry relatives from their village Bagalagunte to the wedding hall in Hesaraghatta on Saturday night.

The reception of Anandappa’s son and Anjinappa’s daughter, both residents of Bagalagunte, was to be held on Saturday night and the wedding on Sunday morning.

The driver had dropped people from the village to Hesaraghatta on the first trip and had returned to Bagalagunte for the second trip. The driver was trying to park the vehicle, when people rushed to the bus in a hurry to get a seat. Venugopal, 37, a resident of Bagalagunte, tried to get into the moving bus from the rear door, clinging onto the window, to throw in a handkerchief onto the seat. However, in the chaos, he lost his balance and fell. The driver, who was  taking the bus in reverse, could not see this and the ran over Venugopal, killing him on the spot.

The driver abandoned the vehicle and fled. The Peenya traffic police rushed to the spot and seized the vehicle. They have registered a case against the BMTC bus driver.
A manhunt has been launched for him. Venugopal was working as a bar bender in the City.
