A second year BCom student committed suicide by hanging herself at home in Hennur police limits late on Sunday night.

The victim has been identified as Sandhya, 19, a resident of Ashwathnagar. She was studying at Baldwin College.

According to the police, Sandhya was the eldest daughter of Parthiban, a worker at a fabric aluminium outlet and Amudha, a homemaker. They moved to Ashwathnagar from Viveknagar a few years ago.

Police said that Sandhya had plans to attend the two-day wedding ceremonies of a friend’s sister. Her parents, however, objected to her going and demanded that she attend the wedding for only one day, in order to spend more time studying.

Upset, Sandhya began to blame her parents for always attempting to restrict her to the house.

“The parents consoled her after she began to cry,” police added.

All of them had dinner and Sandhya and her sister, Divya, 10, went to bed. When the parents opened their bedroom door at around 5.30 am as usual, they found Sandhya’s  body hanging from the ceiling.

“There was no suicide letter,” police said. A postmortem was conducted at Bowring Hospital.

Homemaker dies

A homemaker, who allegedly immolated herself on May 26, succumbed to her injuries on Sunday.

Sources said that she took the extreme step after being unable to bear the torment over dowry by her husband.

The victim, Mamatha, 25, along with her husband Byre Gowda, an auto driver, lived at Nanjamba Agrahara.

“Mamatha doused herself with kerosene and set herself on fire, because she could no longer withstand the repeated demands from her husband for a dowry,” the victim’s eldest sister, said in a complaint.

Neighbours had attempted to save Mamatha’s life by rushing her to Victoria hospital. “After a week-long struggle, the victim died due to the third-degree burns,” doctors at the hospital said.

The Kempegowda Nagar police station has registered a case against victim’s husband, Byre Gowda, under the Dowry Prohibition Act and have arrested him.
