Constables directed to pay Rs 10 lakh compensation

The High Court on Wednesday directed two police constables to pay a sum of Rs 10 lakh as compensation to the wife of Kondapalli Prasad who was killed in custody.

Hearing a petition filed by Kondapalli Saraswathi, wife of Prasad, Justice Mohan Shanthangoudar directed that compensation be paid by the constables — Honnappa and Vedamurthy — who were responsible for Prasad's death.  Prasad, a native of Andhra Pradesh, was a lorry cleaner in Bellary and was picked up by the Cowl Bazaar Police for alleged theft on January 23, 2001.

He died in the station on January 24, 2001. It was ascertained that Prasad had died due to police torture in custody.  Earlier, the constables were sentenced to two years of imprisonment.
