When an abduction case of 60-year-old Ramcharan was filed with Narela police station six months ago, even the police had not imagined that the case will be solved with the digging of victim’s skeleton at a vacant plot in Bawana .

North West police solved the mystery on Sunday as it retrieved the decomposed body of a local leader of a political party and arrested two of the three accused — victim’s wife and her brother-in-law.

The skeleton and remnants of victim’s body were recovered from a pit at an isolated field in Bawana.

Janki Ram, 45, and Vinod Kumar, 35, were nabbed from a house in jhuggi jhopri (JJ) colony in Bawana for the murder of Ramcharan Ram, said Ravindra Yadav, additional commissioner of police (crime branch).

“They were held while they were packing their bags,” added Yadav.

According to police, an information was received that a woman with her two brothers-in-law had killed her husband and buried his body in a field of Bawana and are now preparing to flee to their native village in Bihar.

“The crime branch of Delhi Police received the information on July 7. On verification, it was found that an FIR under section 365 of  Indian Penal Code was registered with Narela police station in this regard,” said the officer.

Arrests made

The officer added that a team was sent to the house and the accused were arrested. During interrogation, both confessed to have committed the murder of Ramcharan.
“It was further revealed that last year, Ramcharan sold his house in Jhuggi Jhopri cluster in Bawana for about Rs 7 lakh and purchased another one for Rs 4 lakh,” the officer said.

Frequent fights

Ramcharan’s wife Janki disclosed that he had developed illicit relation with a woman in the same area and spent the remaining amount on her.

“Due to this reason, we used to fight often and Ramcharan would beat me,” she told police.

She added that she caught her husband while he was trying to take away the property documents of the newly-purchased house for a probable sale or transfer in the name of that woman.

“In December, 2012, she discussed this with her two jijas — Jhagru and Vinod — who assured to get her rid of Ramcharan and would prevent the sale of the house,” she told police.

Initially, they confined Ramcharan to a room on the first floor and tied his legs and told neighbourers that he had gone to his village.

On the New Year’s eve, Jhagru and Vinod drank liquor with Ramcharan.

“Next day, they made Ramcharan consume a lot of liquor. When he got intoxicated, Vinod and Janki held his legs and hands and Jhagru committed the murder by smothering him with a pillow,” the officer said.

That night, they didn’t dispose off the body.

However, they managed to dump it easily the next evening under the cover of dense fog. They stashed the body in a gunny bag and took it to an isolated field and buried in a pit, he added.
