JOIN USHarshith sets new mark in high jump
Harshith has been making steady progress over the last couple of years and had touched his personal best of 1.93 metres at last year’s school nationals in Kochi. On Thursday, he sailed past that mark — and also the meet record of 1.90 metres — with a superb 1.97M clearance.
On a day when three meet records bit the dust, Harshith’s effort stood out for the promise it carried. The 10th standard student of S Kadambi Vidya Kendra cleared every height starting from 1.70 on his first attempt. After nailing 1.97, he tried two metres but failed in all his three attempts.
“I got overexcited and because of it, I lost out on energy,” said Harshith, who trains under Gaonkar and Krishnamoorthy. “I can go much higher but I need to improve my technique,” he said.
Srishti Sunil of Indo-German bettered her own mark of 1.47 in the girls’ under-14 high jump, clearing 1.53 while Ranjana Bhadri of SAI Dharwad set a new mark in under-14 shot put with an effort of 8.55 metres.
Two records were equalled on the day. Nirupama Sunderraj capped an excellent meet with a 24.8 second timing in the Under-18 200M, eqalling M R Poovamma’s record set in 2007. Priyanka V’s 5:02.2 in the girls under-16 1500M equalled the existing mark of Sharada Rani achieved last year.
