To rein in anti-social elements and ensure orderliness, Police Commissioner M A Saleem has launched an exercise to redo the list of rowdy sheeters in the city.

As a first step, all police stations in the city have been given instructions to vet into the number of offenders involved in assault cases over the last eight years, using weapons. Following this, a majority of the total 16 stations, comprising all three sub-divisions — Narasimharaja, Devaraja and Krishnaraja — have prepared the list, taking the number of new rowdies to 102. The numbers may increase further with two to three police stations yet to submit the list.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, the commissioner said, in the existing list, there were 234 rowdy elements in different age groups.

It’s imperative to check budding law-breakers to maintain orderliness. According to the law, even eve-teasing comes under serious crime and the accused can be considered as a rowdy. Likewise, different sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) — especially 324 and 326 — give much teeth to consider the accused as rowdy.

On the other hand, to strengthen the existing police force, those on deputation; from police station to other wings, have been relieved and sent back to their original place of work. Already 50 men on deputation — including 14 from the office of police commissioner — have been meted out the same treatment.

It includes four men earlier drawn from City Armed Reserve (CAR) police force to gardening at the police commissioner’s office. Some among the commando force, originally from CAR have been sent back and will be replaced by fresh recruits. While 40 others are in the line.

That apart, City Crime Branch (CCB), one of the major wings headed by an ACP cadre officer, playing a key role in preventing and detecting organised crimes and anti-national activities is expected to be strengthened, keeping in mind the growing population of the city.

The commissioner said, in his recent proposal to the State home ministry, he has sought sanctioning of additional two inspectors against existing equal number of inspectors at CCB, four sub-inspectors against the existing one, four ASIs, 10 civil head constables and 20 constables.
