Minister for Primary and Secondary Education Kimmane Ratnakar on Friday has said that the State government had corrected the mistakes in the primary and secondary school textbooks, apart from taking appropriate action in trying to enforce a secular view while teaching students.

“Our government has already taken action to remove portions of the textbooks which are offensive or hurtful to people from various castes and religions. The mistakes, which has come to our notice, have all been corrected,” he said.

Earlier, a debate ensued over the teaching of yoga in schools after Ratnakar said that he will take cognisance of all religions before introducing yoga education. Alarmed over the religious connotations over the statement, JD(S) member Basavaraj Horatti said that there is no religion in teaching Yoga.

“We would like the government to note that religion and yoga are not related and that every student must learn yoga for the mental and physical well being. It is deplorable, if the government is considering to teach yoga on religious lines,” he said.

Ratnakar responded by saying that the government was fully committed to teaching yoga and that it will enforce it in all its schools.
