Last Updated 29 July 2013, 20:04 IST

The State government has said that it has submitted a proposal to the Central government, seeking 2.5 lakh chemical coated mosquito nets to distribute in seven districts where dengue and malaria are rampant.

In a written reply to nominated member M D Lakshminarayana in the legislative council on Monday, Minister for Health and Family Welfare U T Khader said the proposal had been sent to the Centre under a World Bank scheme. The concept of chemical coating the nets was introduced as the government is encouraging more people to buy mosquito nets.

He added that as per the July 23, 2013 report, 3,243 cases of dengue had been detected in the State and ten people had succumbed to it. Accordingly, the Central government has begun a ‘malaria eradication programme’, which will be aimed at prevention of the diseases. The nets will be distributed in Bagalkot, Bijapur, Bellary, Gulbarga, Raichur, Koppal and Tumkur.
