AICC General Secretary B K Hariprasad was on Thursday declared elected to the Rajya Sabha from the State unopposed. With the JD(S) and the BJP deciding not to field their candidates in the byelection, Hariprasad had no competitors.

Nomination papers of two independent candidates were rejected as they could not get the support of the requisite number of the MLAs’ support.

The byelection was necessitated following the resignation of Anil Lad, who was elected to the Legislative Assembly from Bellary in the recently held elections.

Hariprasad told reporters he will utilise the opportunity given by the party for the development of the State. “I will try to get as much benefits from the Centre to the State in terms of developmental projects and schemes,” he added.

He criticised the BJP for allegedly trying to rake up Ram Mandir issue ahead of the 2014 Lok Sabha polls. The party is under illusion that Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi will do a miracle.

Asked about Housing Minister Ambareesh’s controversial statement compared Chief Minister Siddaramaiah with Modi, he said it improper to compare Siddaramaiah with Modi. “Siddaramaiah is a pro-people leader, while Modi is a communal rakshasa,” he stated.
