Last Updated 23 August 2013, 22:07 IST

A 35-year-old school teacher on Thursday sustained grievous injuries as she fell down 20 feet while preventing a student from committing suicide.

Barnali Ruhat of Odisha, a teacher at Padma Sheshadri Bala Bhavan in Bannerghatta’s Laxmipura village, was admitted to Fortis Hospital on B G Road. She is stable and out of danger following a surgery, said the Bannerghatta police. But sources at Fortis Hospital said she was admitted to the ICU and it was too early to assess her chances of recovery. Barnali has injured her vertebral column. She is also suffering from paraplegia.

The incident occurred around 2:30 pm. A Class VI student, who did not do well in the examination, had tampered with her mark sheet. She allegedly deleted the original marks and entered fresh score. A few staff members noticed her changing the marks, said the police.

The staff scolded her and threatened to inform her parents. Frightened, the girl threatened to jump from the second floor balcony. A teacher called Barnali for help.

As she rushed to avert any untoward situation, Barnali slipped and fell down, said the police.

Security guards rushed to Barnali’s rescue. Meanwhile, the girl also took a leap. The guards, however, managed to catch her, the police added.

Barnali and her husband, a software engineer, live at Ranka Colony on B G Road.

She joined the school around four years ago. She was the class teacher for standard VIII, said the police.

“There is nothing fishy about the incident. Our officers went to the school and hospital and inquired about the incident. Barnali and her husband were not willing to lodge a complaint and said it was purely an accident,” Bangalore Rural District Superintendent of Police, Ramesh, told Deccan Herald.

The girl’s mother is said to be a doctor in a reputed corporate hospital in the City.
