JD(S) in a fix over State party chief post

Last Updated 05 September 2013, 21:22 IST

The Janata Dal (S) appears to be in a fix over the selection of its State president and the chief whip in the Legislative Assembly.

Despite statements by the party’s national president H D Deve Gowda and the leader of the Opposition in the Assembly H D Kumaraswamy that differences within the party would be ironed out, there seem to be a few ‘unresolved’ issues the JD(S) leaders are still grappling to resolve.

Sources in the JD(S) said the race for the State president post had narrowed down to three candidates in the form of Iqbal Ansari, Basanagouda Patil Yatnal and A Krishnappa.
However, the ruckus over the resignation of Basavakalyan MLA Mallikarajun Khuba and the ‘interest’ of certain leaders to strengthen the party base in North Karnataka are still unresolved.

Khan’s re-entry

It is said JD(S) strongman Zameer Ahmed Khan may have returned to the party with assurances of the chief whip’s position. While Khan denied he had set preconditions to return to the party, a section of the JD(S) MLAs are not convinced about the Chamarajpet MLAs intentions.

Certain leaders alleged that if Khan became the party chief whip, it would amount to a mockery of the position as he is seldom present in the Assembly.

Meanwhile, the decision to form a core committee still appears to be only on paper, as the party is unable to bring together its legislators and workers on the same page.

With Gowda attending the parliament session, the core committee formation is pending finalisation.
