JOIN USIn a rather startling revelation made by the Department of Pre University Education, only 49,055 students out of the 2,08,336 who appeared for the supplementary exams held in July 2013 have managed to clear their papers.
Narasimha Nayak, joint director of the department, said that only 15,678 students out of the 64,108 who had appeared for the supplementary exams from the science stream have passed them. From the commerce stream, 37,305 students could not clear their papers. While 93,948 students had appeared from the arts stream, only 20,402 had cleared it in the second attempt.
Sree Ram, secretary, Karnataka PU College Lecturers’ Federation said that since the students do not get enough time to prepare for their exams, they may not be able to get the passing grades. “They hardly get a month to prepare themselves for the supplementary exams.
Earlier, when the supplementary exams were held in October, results were much better,” he added. Ram also opined that the supplementary exams failed to increase the pass rates of those failing in the exams repeatedly.
‘Tough to cope’
Asha Srinivasan, principal, Vani Vilas Government PU College, Bangalore, pointed out that students who manage to clear their Class 10 exams with below average grades find it tough to cope with the PU syllabus.
“It is important to understand that there is a lot of difference between the two syllabi. PU syllabus is large,” she said, besides stating that students not receiving positive motivation could also lead to the failure.
However, Rame Gowda, director, department of Pre University Education said the time given for preparation was sufficient.
“Since it is the same syllabus, students will only need to revise and go through what they had already read,” he said.
He also said that the number of them appearing for supplementary exams includes a considerable number of students who had withdrawn their papers hoping to get better marks.
