Indian diplomat's father cries foul

Last Updated 14 December 2013, 04:17 IST

Former IAS officer and father of an Indian woman diplomat arrested on visa fraud charges in New York before being released on bond, charged the US authorities with “being racially biased.”

Uttam Khobragade, who had created waves when he took over reins of BEST (BrihanMumbai  Electric Suburban Transport) as general manager, told mediapersons on Friday that his daughter Devyani Khobragade's case reeks of “conspiracy and racial bias against Indians in the US”. “It is crystal clear that they want to harass Indians...I only hope the Indian government will not take the issue lightly.”

The Indian woman diplomat, who is a Deputy Consul General at the Consulate in New York, has been accused by India-born US Attorney Preet Bharara of making false statements in a visa application for an Indian national employed as a baby-sitter and housekeeper at her New York home.
