The city police arrested eight men, including three rowdies, on Saturday, in connection with a case where two medical college students were allegedly kidnapped and blackmailed at Deralakatte.

The boy and the girl, belonging to different communities, are college mates in a private medical college at Deralakatte on the outskirts of Mangalore.

According to the complaint filed by the victims, they had been to dinner on Thursday night and were engaged in conversation after parking their car near a bar and restaurant at Deralakatte.

Meanwhile, they were surrounded by a gang of men, who not only abused the couple, but also forcefully took them to an isolated area where they were forced to engage in sexual act. The gang threatened the girl of rape, when the couple refused to engage in the act. They videographed the forceful sexual intercourse and also assaulted the couple.

Extortion

Then the gang tried to extort money by threatening to put the objectionable video clip on internet.

They demanded Rs 25 lakh, failing which they threatened to upload the video on internet and also inform the family and college principal.

As the couple agreed to give them Rs 3 lakh, they released the girl to bring the money on Friday, while they held the boy captive.

Soon after the release, the girl informed her friends who in turn brought the matter to the notice of Child Welfare Committee and a complaint was lodged.

The police arrested eight men on Saturday. Addressing a press meet, Mangalore City Police Commissioner R Hithendra said that the main accused who has been nabbed has been facing 12 other cases of dacoity and murder.

“The team escaped from the police eye on Friday, however, we succeeded in arresting them on Saturday. The investigation is under progress,” he said.

The police have seized weapons and videos from the arrested. The accused have been produced before the magistrate and are sent to police custody.
