Devastating emotion - Anger

Last Updated 04 January 2014, 18:54 IST

‘Relationships never die a natural death. They are always murdered’ goes a worldly wise saying. They will be murdered by harmful emotions like anger, malice, envy, etc.

Of all the negative emotions, wrath can cause a raging reaction and instantaneous consequences.

While a man was polishing his new car, his 6-year-old son picked up a stone and scratched lines on the side of the car. In anger, the man took the child’s hand and hit it many times; not realising that he was using a wrench. At the hospital, the child lost all his fingers due to multiple fractures. When the child saw his father...with painful eyes he asked, “Dad when will my fingers grow back?”

The man was so hurt and speechless; he went back to his car and kicked it a lot of times. Devastated by his own actions, sitting in front of that car he looked at the scratches; the child had written ‘LOVE YOU DAD’.

The next day that man committed suicide! This is a true story, showing how a deed done in the heat of the moment had such devastating consequences. Anger and Love will have no limits; one should choose the latter to have a beautiful life devoid of the devastating emotion.

Let’s be careful to keep this thought in mind: that ‘anger’ is a deadly poison. That poison comes out in the form of scathing unkind words and deeds.

Hence, it is important that you watch your thoughts, because they become your words, you must watch your words, because they become actions, you must watch your actions as they become your habits and you must watch your habits, because surely they will become your character and you must watch your character as it becomes your destiny.

It is very surprising that the word ‘hate’ has four letters, so does the word ‘love’, ‘enemies’ has seven letters, so does the word ‘friends’, ‘lying’ has five letters, so does the word ’truth’, ‘right’ has five letters’, so does the word ’wrong’, and ‘anger’ has five letters, so does the word ’happy’. It is up to you to choose the right word without any second thought or confusion. ‘Words are not merely words, they are what we feel every day. Emotions make or mar a person. It is what you do with those emotions that make you who you are!

It is by developing some personality traits that one can maintain calm and peace at internal level. Stop doing things that you don’t want to – that will help you maintain your poise and calm. The eagerness to do something gives positive energy to a person, if that is lacking and if you are doing something under duress, you are bound to feel angry inside.

Say what you really mean - don’t say things which you are from the tip of your tongue – the conflict between what you really want to say and what you actually said will cause an imbalance in your mind – anger can precipitate.

Everybody must remember one simple principle - ‘Our mouth is like a refrigerator door. If we keep it open, it keeps losing its cooling!’
