KRS security being beefed up

Police department and Cauvery Neeravari Nigam (CNN) has decided to beef up security at Krishnarajasagar Reservoir, which is a major source of drinking water for Bangalore, Mandya and Mysore districts.

The process to install Closed Circuit Television Cameras (CCTV) at the reservoir, so that the National Security Force and Police department can keep a close eye on the activities in and around KRS. A total of Rs five crore is being spent to install CCTVs and other security measures. Superintendent engineer of CNN, Shankaregowda said that the tender process to procure CCTV cameras was already under process and installation of the same will be started soon.

More than 60 cameras will be installed in 60 acres of land around KRS, and the locations have already been earmarked. Surveillance cameras, capable of capturing high quality images even in the dark, will also be installed. Bushan Borase, superintendent of police said that the cameras are also capable of alerting security personnel, if a person or any suspicious substance is found inside KRS premises.

Apart from these, metal detectors will also be installed at the entrance of the reservoir, so that people arriving at the reservoir can be prevented from taking any dangerous substances inside. The north and south entrances of the reservoirs will be installed with ‘boom barriers’, he said. Persons having electronic identity cards will only be allowed entry.

Fencing around the reservoir, intensifying inspections at entrance and exit gates of the reservoir and setting up two control rooms for CCTV and security arrangements are also part of the project.

Karnataka State Industrial Security Police will be deputed to provide security for the reservoir. “Initially we will depute 30 personnel. If need be, we will increase the number of personnel to 120,” he said.

The security arrangements are being made in the light of bomb attackscarried out at major centers in the country.
