UP man absconding after cheating people of Rs 5 lakh

Last Updated 11 January 2014, 20:16 IST

A man from Uttar Pradesh has been absconding from the city after cheating many people of close to Rs five lakh. Arjun Gill, a native of Lucknow, had opened a Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) firm in Bannimantap, NR Mohalla, four moths ago.

He had bought three laptops from one Arif Pasha of the same locality. He issued cheques to Pasha, which bounced when the latter tried to encash them. He had furnished his office and issued  cheques, without sufficient funds in his account, to many decorators. When Pasha and the decorators tried to contact Gill on his mobile phone about the cheques, they found that it was switched off.

Police Commissioner M A Saleem said the incident came to light when Pasha lodged a complaint with the police. “Gill initially purchased two laptops from Pasha and paid him in cash. He later bought three more laptops from him and issued cheques to pay for them. He had made out as many as 10 cheques (of Syndicate bank, Mysore Road branch) for Rs 78,000. The cheques bounced due to insufficient funds in the account,” said a police officer, who wished to maintain anonymity.

Gill had not paid his office rent too. He is married to a local, Sabeena. Sabeena claims she is unaware of her husband’s whereabouts. It has also been learnt that Gill promised jobs to many people and took money from them, but we are yet to obtain further information, the officer added.
